On Thursday, 10 June 2021, the NSW government announced that starting mid-year, 250 international students will be allowed to return to school every fortnight under a pilot program that will begin in the second half of this year. 

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said in a statement, ‘The students will be required to quarantine on arrival and the quarantine will be  purpose-built student accommodation following the same rules for all international arrivals.’ He added, “Typically we have more than 250,000 international students studying in NSW each year and they directly supported over 95,000 local jobs prior to the pandemic”.

The state government stated that the universities would select foreign students based on ‘multiple criteria’ and their personal circumstances, with priority given to higher degree students.

The plan will be paid for by the industry, while the state government will provide governance and operational support. Council of International Students spokesperson Belle Lim said there was hope things would return to normal again. “We are pleased to see the cautious approach but are hopeful the numbers of students arriving will scale over time,” she said.

The plan will go to the federal government for review. Federal Education Minister Alan Tudge said the plan “appears to meet the criteria we have set, but we will work through the details carefully”.

 This news has provided some glimmer of hope to more than 47,000 international students outside of Australia who cannot travel to complete their studies. Whether or not the Federal government will approve the plan, time will only tell.

Application process

The application process can take 4-6 weeks on average for research applications. Students are encouraged to identify and contact a potential supervisor before submitting an expression of interest for a quicker and smoother application process. CQUniversity has a wealth of research experts involved in major local, national and international research projects who can be contacted via ‘find an expert’ page. 

It is best (but not essential) if the prospective student candidate can go through this process, before submitting the initial Expression of Interest (EOI).

Stage 1: Initial Expression of Interest (EOI) to be submitted to the university. Students do not necessarily need to submit a detailed research proposal at this stage – just an abstract is fine (an abstract ideally should not be more than 2 pages long, with a brief background/description of the research project OR a question to be investigated and what is the rationale/context).

Stage 2: Once the EOI is approved by the School of Graduate Research, a full application needs to be submitted. At Stage 2, students must submit a detailed research proposal (if they haven’t already), which needs to be in line with the Research Proposal Form.

Adapting to change can be a difficult thing — especially if it’s in the context of changing your environment. You might feel anxious and have difficulties coping from being away from what you find familiar, be it your family, friends, or everything else you know.

Declutter

Neurologist Hannah McLane notes how decluttering can help with mindfulness, as it can help you stop worrying about problems in your home and focus on your work. Additionally, by reducing the number of your possessions, you’ll get to create more breathing room and evaluate what’s really important to you. Getting rid of unnecessary belongings can help you stay focused in the present, which is after all, what mindfulness is all about. Donate or throw away items you haven’t used in months, and try to stick to only the bare minimum. Your mindfulness practice will help you get rid of your “I-might-need-this” mentality, which can extend towards the feelings you may have about your move.

Set goals

You’re bound to have some time to yourself after your move to unpack items and get used to your space. Daydreaming in Paradise recommends setting goals, as you can avoid letting days melt into one long, unbroken stretch. Set personal and professional goals, and ask yourself where you want to see yourself in your new place in six months to one year. Do you want to make new friends? Visit multiple places in and around the city? This way, you’ll get to make the most of your time adjusting to your new living environment and be mindful of your time.

Stay in the present moment

You’ll need to start practising the art of staying in the present moment to truly accept your new living environment. Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings and watch them come and go. Acknowledge how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking, but don’t let it get in the way of what you need to do. With practice, you’ll get to focus more on the positives in front of you rather than the negatives that may stray in the back of your mind.

Get rid of bad habits

Getting rid of negative habits is a challenge, but it’s one that mindfulness can tackle. Understanding what your triggers are can help you change them — so long as you make these changes step-by-step. After all, forming good habits can take time, and breaking bad ones will take even longer. Write down and keep track of bad habits you want to get rid of, and try to tackle the easiest ones first. Then, once completed, you can move on to the next one on your list.

Meditate

Meditation helps a lot with mindfulness. Our writer Lenard Sciancalepore suggests that meditation can be super helpful for your brain, as you can take a few moments to breathe, centre yourself, and be present in your body. You’ll get to tackle intrusive thoughts and negative feelings that occur as you adjust. Fortunately, there are plenty of apps you can use online, House of Wellness recommends apps such as Smiling Mind, Headspace, and Aura to help you get started on your meditative journey.

Australia is one of the prominent locations for international students as well as for individuals looking to settle down. Melbourne is ranked second in The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2019 Global Liveability Index, missing out on the top spot by just 0.7%, a place which Melbourne held for eight consecutive years. The title itself primarily comes down to personal preferences, with multiple sources selecting different locations. However, the stable society with low crime rates, excellent healthcare system, access to quality education, higher employability rate and world-class infrastructures make Melbourne a magnificent city to live and work in.
